The Missing Meeting

A short workplace story that asks the reader to notice clues, make a prediction and combine information from text and speech.

At 9:10 on Monday morning, Maya opened her calendar and stared at the same meeting twice. The first entry said “Client review — 9:30.” The second said “Project team — 10:00.”

Client review means a meeting in which a client discusses or gives feedback on work.

She had prepared the presentation for the client review over the weekend. When she reached the conference room, however, the lights were off. There was no one inside.

Pause and predict

What is the most likely explanation at this point?

Maya checked her phone. At 9:14, she had received a message from Daniel, the project coordinator. She had not noticed it because her phone was on silent.

Listen to Daniel's message

Listen first. Then decide what the message tells you.

“Hi Maya. Quick update: the client has asked us to move the review to tomorrow afternoon. Please use the 10 o’clock slot this morning for the project team meeting instead. I’ll send the revised calendar invite shortly.”

Now the situation made sense. The client review had not been cancelled. It had been rescheduled for the following afternoon.
